The waters of Casuarina Boat Harbour in Bunbury will turn red next week as the Department of Transport (Do. T) collects data to assist in future marine planning decisions. Do. T Manager of Maritime Projects James Holder said a safe, non- toxic, non- staining red dye called Rhodamine WT would be released in Casuarina Boat Harbour on Tuesday March 8, 2.
He said the dye would remain visible for several days before breaking down without any impact to the environment."Monitoring and sampling will continue for 1. Transforming Bunbury Waterfront initiative progresses," Mr Holder said."During the study period harbour users can continue to enjoy the harbour facilities with no additional restrictions to regular activities, including fishing and swimming."Dye studies have been used previously in Koombana Bay and at other locations in the South West region to successfully track water movement without any impact on the environment and there is significant support for this study as the results will be important for future decision making about marine infrastructure."Mr Holder said local businesses and other stakeholders had been consulted about the dye release in the planning phase of the study and an awareness campaign had been activated to inform the local community. He said the Dolphin Discovery Centre had described the project team's work as an essential investigation and expressed confidence there would not be any detrimental impact on the Koombana dolphins or other marine life."Apart from the temporary change in water colour, which is expected to only last several days, there will be no environmental impacts from the study," Mr Holder said.
Signage will be positioned around the harbour to inform users and members of the public. For more information people can email maritimeplanning@transport.
